Spectra vs Mixpanel: an honest comparison

Spectra was built as a Mixpanel alternative, so the comparison is natural. This page tries to be fair: Mixpanel is a mature product, and for some teams it's the right choice. Here's where the two differ.

Pricing: fixed vs usage-based

This is the biggest difference. Mixpanel's paid plans are priced on event volume, so your bill follows your traffic. Spectra plans include a set number of events for a fixed monthly price in rupees:

  • Starter: ₹9,999 a month for 1 million events
  • Growth: ₹29,999 a month for 5 million events
  • Scale: ₹50,000 a month for 10 million events

Prices are before GST. If you go over, Spectra keeps collecting and charges ₹8 per 1,000 extra events on your renewal. For a growing team, that means the analytics line in your budget doesn't need a forecast.

Usage-based vs fixed pricing as traffic grows M1M2M3M4M5M6M7M8M9M10M11M12 Usage-based bill Fixed plan (one step up at month 9) Monthly analytics cost as events grow 24% a month
Illustrative: with steady growth, a usage-based bill climbs every month; a fixed plan changes only when you choose a bigger plan.

Reports

Both tools cover the core of product analytics:

  • Trends of any event, with breakdowns and filters.
  • Funnels with conversion between steps and breakdowns by segment.
  • Retention cohorts by day, week or month.
  • Flows before and after an event.

In Spectra you can also filter and break down every report by user profile properties (plan, company, city), and share a board through a view-only link with people who don't have an account.

Identity

Counting people correctly matters more than any chart. Both tools link a visitor's anonymous activity to their profile when they log in. In Spectra, sending a user_id and device_id on the same event is enough, with no special identify call required, and the SDK does this for you on identify(). Unique users, funnels and retention then count one person across devices and logins.

Setup

Spectra's SDK is one npm package for browsers and Node.js. It batches events, retries when the network drops, tracks page views and campaigns, and passes the visitor's IP or city when you track from a server.

If you already use Mixpanel, you don't have to rewrite your tracking: Spectra accepts events in Mixpanel's format. See how to switch from Mixpanel.

Privacy

Spectra uses IP addresses once to work out country and city, then drops them; IPs are never stored. Project admins can erase a person's events and profile in one step for GDPR and DPDP requests.

Where Mixpanel wins

Be honest about your needs. Choose Mixpanel if you need:

  • Session replay alongside analytics.
  • Experiments and feature flags in the same tool.
  • Warehouse connectors and a large integration catalogue.
  • A long track record and enterprise procurement features.

Where Spectra wins

Choose Spectra if you want:

  • A fixed, predictable bill in rupees with a GST invoice.
  • Core product analytics that the whole team can use, with no per-seat price.
  • A quick switch that keeps your existing tracking.
